First Generation Program

A new initiative to help First Generation students succeed in their academic journey.

Who are First Generation students?

First Generation students are those who are among the first generation in their family to attend a college, a university, or an apprenticeship program in Canada. Their brothers and sisters may have post-secondary education, but not their parents and grandparents.

What are the challenges First Generation students may face in preparing to attend or while attending college?

Picture of Students

- having sufficient funds for college and living expenses;

- completing all the requirements of the college processes;

- discovering and accessing college resources and services;

- juggling school, work and home responsibilities; and

- coping with all aspects of college life (academic, social, emotional, financial).

What is the First Generation program?

St. Lawrence College has developed some exciting, creative ways to help First Generation students be successful in their academic studies. This new initiative will provide assistance to First Generation students by:

- giving students encouragement and help to understand the college system, to fully comprehend the importance

   of post secondary education and to make informed choices;

- engaging parents in a partnership that will foster independence, self-esteem, and confidence which will help ease

   the transition to college; and

- providing ongoing support during their time at college.

What support for First Generation students can St. Lawrence College provide?

A First Generation Student Success Advisor will help students by:

- assisting in accessing funding, services, and resources;

- touring the college and providing orientation to services and resources;

- delivering workshops that address financial, organizational, academic, and social issues;

- offering individual consultation;

- arranging peer tutoring, study groups, academic support and strategies for success;

- helping to make community contacts and connections;

- facilitating mentoring opportunities by returning First Generation students;

- providing information about social, athletic, college and community events;

- creating a safe environment in which to discuss and resolve issues important to students;

- giving students opportunities for feedback.
