General Collections

Books and audiovisual materials are interfiled on the shelves at the Kingston campus library. In the Cornwall and Brockville Campus Libraries, a separate shelving section holds the videos. Materials are shelved according to the Library of Congress call number system. Use the Library catalogue to find specific materials. Most books in the libraries may be borrowed for three weeks, although some in heavy demand may be restricted to one week only. Loan policies for audiovisual materials, such as DVDs, videotapes and audiocassettes, vary by campus. Materials may be renewed up to 5 times if no one else has requested them.

Special Collections

Reference Collections

These collections of encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, indexes, almanacs, etc. provide quick factual information and background information. These materials are for use in the library only.

Reserve Collections

These collections may contain current textbooks and other books or articles which teachers have assigned as reading. Most material is for use in the library only. Some items, such as accounting solutions manuals, may be on a one-hour loan. At the Kingston campus, some material may be borrowed overnight, from two hours before the library closes, and must be returned before 9:00am the following open day.

Periodicals Collections

The latest issues of current magazine, journal, and newspaper subscriptions are displayed in reading lounge areas in the libraries. Older issues are kept behind the circulation desk and are signed out from there for use in the libraries only.

Government Publications

These collections provide material from Canadian and Ontario departments and agencies, as well as census, other statistical and legal information. These materials are for use in the libraries only.

Electronic Resources

The SLC Library provides online databases, e-books and e-journals.  For information on the online library resources, click here.  These resources are available to current SLC students, faculty and staff.
