Marianne van Silfhout Gallery

The Chicken History of Art  ~  Mary Peppard

Exhibition runs Friday, February 19, 2010 through Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Exhibition Description:

The Chicken History of Art is a whimsical collection of paintings that links the traditions of Western Painting to the appreciation of poultry in Western culture. The exhibition opens with a depiction of the “First Rooster” from the cave paintings of Lascaux, France (approx. 30,000 BC) and ends with modern works from the present day. It is an attempt to give chickens the importance and respect that they deserve in our culture. What better way is there to do this than to depict poultry in Art?

Opening Reception:

Tuesday, February 23rd   3:00pm – 5:00pm

Hope to see you there!

Marianne van Silfhout Gallery at St. Lawrence College

St. Lawrence College is thrilled to announce that the the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery has officially opened on the Brockville campus. The gallery opened to the public in September 2007.

This state-of-the-art community art gallery is located at the front atrium of the campus and will be a focus for the visual arts for Brockville and the larger Eastern Ontario area. Creation of the gallery was made possible by a major half-million dollar bequest from the estate of Marianne van Silfhout, a graduate of the Fine Art program at St. Lawrence College, as well as numerous donors to the St. Lawrence College Foundation. Behind this gift is Marianne’s belief that wilderness adventure and education and art are inextricably bound together in an experience of enduring value and benefit to humanity. The bequest will also fund bursaries for both part-time and full-time Fine Arts students at St. Lawrence College.
