Data Storage

Your Home Directory (H: Drive)

SLC Connect provides you with the ability to store and retrieve data files from your own private storage area on our network. With a network user account, each St. Lawrence College student is given a Home Directory (also known as an H: drive) in which to store all their data files (assignments, projects, reports, etc.).

And you can securely access your home directory remotely from a computer off-campus using the SLC VPN connection.

Safeguarding your data is critical.

All files stored on a user's H: drive are regularly backed up to tape for safekeeping by IT.

Each user's Home Directory has a quota of 600MB.

Security of your Data Files

Data files stored on the hard drive (C:) of a lab computer are not secure from other network users - any user can access your files and take advantage of your hard work.

Due to the high volume of users in our computer labs, it is often necessary for IT technical staff to format and re-image the computers in the labs. As a result, all data files stored locally on the hard drive (C:) would be destroyed.

USB Memory Devices

We also recommend the use of USB memory devices (USB keys) as a storage solution.

CD Burners

Our Mac Lab and Digital Arts & Music Lab are both equipped with CD burners - which provide the means to store larger data files such as high-res images.
